Mary Jeanette Stoeckel passed away at her Fleetville home at the age of 101 on June 3, 2023, in the loving embrace of her daughter Barbara Davies. Known to one and all as Penny, she was the wife of Walter William Stoeckel, who passed away in 2002.
Born in Hooper N.Y., Penny was the daughter of the late Gove and Mary Mitchell. She was proceeded in death by her loving sister, Barbara Virginia Miller.
Penny is survived by her daughter, Barbara Davies of Fleetville Pa.; her two sons, Kurt Stoeckel of San Francisco Calif., and Bill Stoeckel of Leawood Kan.; as well as six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
After graduating from Scranton Prep, Penny studied art at Temple University. She was an active member of the Church of the Epiphany in Glenburn Pa. She was a member of the Honesdale Golf Club with her husband Bill. Penny enjoyed spending her summers at Lake Waynewood in Hamlin, Pa. The friendships she forged over her lifetime at Waynewood endured even through her final days.
As a devoted practitioner of homeopathy and wholesome nutrition, Penny enjoyed a full life, entirely free of illness and disease. Penny lived her life with a simple dignity, always looking for the positive in people, with a spirit of good will towards everyone.
Honoring Penny’s wishes for privacy and her request for no public viewing or service, members of her immediate family gathered at the Corey Strauch Funeral Home on Tuesday to say their final goodbyes prior to cremation. The family will host a Celebration of Life in honor of Penny at the end of August, with details to follow.
Penny’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to HHCP Hospice staff members Judy, Maureen, Tim, and Trisha for the degree of compassion and friendship they showed Penny in her final months at home.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family encourages well-wishers to consider making donations in Penny’s name to the charity of their choice.
