Bernice Louise (Bacon) Olthuis, age 99, passed away peacefully at The Highlands at Wyomissing, Pa., on Thursday, September 7th, 2017. Bernice was born February 12th, 1918, and grew up on the Bacon Farm in Edwardsburg, Mich.
Her love of books and learning led her to earn degrees in education and library science at Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan. She married fellow student Robert William Olthuis in 1950. Together they moved to Garden City, N. Y., where Robert pursued an
engineering career and Bernice worked as a librarian.
Robert and Bernice Olthuis moved to The Highlands in 1998. Robert’s sister, Evelyn Bredder, soon after joined them there. Robert and Bernice enjoyed having an active social life and making many close friends. Bernice is
remembered for her dedication to the Highland’s library and her cheerfulness.
Survivors include her three daughters: Diane Olthuis, of Hope, Ala.; Michelle Sheinbaum and Jayne Olthuis, of The Villages, Fla. Evelyn Bredder still resides at The Highlands.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her two sisters, Eleanor (Bacon) Edmondson and
Virginia (Bacon) Pardee.
A memorial service will be held at The Highlands. The day and time is yet to be determined.
